ARCH1390 - Assignment 2 - Weekly progress 2

Trial Design of the house

'Spaceship' roof sketches

During the week I try to research appropriate roof for the house, I am trying to adopt the shape of the spaceship for the roof. Even it seems ridiculous, but i got inspiration from those sketches. I try to adopt the idea which i got during the last studio.

These are some images of my trial model from Google Sketchup :

ARCH1390 - Assignment 2 - Weekly progress 1

Design Concept

During last studio, I am try to make the concept design of the house for my client. Actually, Wesley helping me with the design concept. The basic concept of mine for my client is about huge roof. Most of Prix (Coop Himmelb(l)au) building used 'roof" as the main area of the building or making the roof extremely overlaying the lower part. These two buildings are my inspiration of this idea.

Busan Cinema Center by Coop Himmelb(l)au; http://www.styleofdesign.com/architecture/busan-cinema-center-coop-himmelblau/

Confluence Museum by Coop Himmelb(l)au; http://designyoutrust.com/architecture/confluence-museum-by-coop-himmelblau-under-construction/

Furthermore, Wesley try to helping me to develop my idea. He got an idea about 'box overlay by tissue' it was like the folding exercise. So the idea is about the roof which overlay the 'box' (house) smoothly, hence we got two extremely different shape combined together but quite smoothly.

Another idea is about 'space crash'. So in the first idea is all about smooth and in the second idea is all about hard and extreme. The basic concept is about the spacecraft which collapse in the air and suddenly crash down to the house (box). So the idea is about combining two extremely different shape which are primitive shape such as box as the house and astonish shape like spacecraft as the roof. However, in this idea the 'roof' will act as the second floor of the house.

Design Concept

Furthermore, during spare time I am doing some research about the material for the house and I got two interesting material which I might be used. The first one is Corten material, it is a weathering steel, steel which is fast to rust and give some kind of rusty colour. Another one is wall panelling using white colour wood.

ARCH1390 - Assignment 2 - DA Submission Part 1

 Site Analysis

Site Analysis Drawing based on Survey

On Saturday afternoon, 5th October 2013 I am doing site inspection to the client site (house) (5 Wyargine St, Mosman). The wind was very smooth when I visited that site (approximately 1 km/hr - 5 km/hr) and come from the sea, so it facing or toward the house. The sun was rising from the sea, so the house will get a morning sunshine. The first floor of the house was around 2m rise from the street, the reason behind that might be to get better view of the sea from the house. When I come to the site, I was surprised by the house on that site, it's different with the one that I look at the Google Map, the existing house now look strong and beautiful. Moreover, this house also located near the Edwards beach (just approximately 70m) due to that this house got really an amazing view. This house was located in 50km/hr zone, and have 4 bus stop near the house, however, those bus stop do not operate on Saturday and Sunday. It just took 3-4 minutes (by car) to the main road (Millitary Rd) and took around 15 mins- 20 mins (by car) to the Sydney CBD. Furthermore, Beside this sketch drawing I also have some images taken from the site to show the actual house, the views from the house etc. On the Sketch drawing, I put number 1 until 7 (in box) to show the location where I took those pictures. These are the pictures that I already took from the site :

(box) 1 - The house on the site

(box) 2 - The pathway down to the Balmoral Beach (~30m) it just took araound 40m to get to this path from the site

(box) 3 - The house on the site taken from the front neighbor house

(box) 4 - The North East View from the site

(box) 5 - Try to capture the site from Burran Ave, the brown wall house is number 7 (beside the site)

(box) 6 - The view of Edwards beach from the wyargine lookout (near bus stop)

(box) 7 - The South East view from the site

  • Until now, Member of the Austrian Art Senate, of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts as well as of the Advisory Committee for Building Culture; Member of the Architectural Association Austria, AUSC in Cuba, RIBA in UK, AIA, Architectural Association Italy, and Union of BDA in Germany

Design Style
In the beginning around 1973, the architectural designs produced by Coop Himmelb(l)au [Wolf D. Prix] are pneumatic spatial constructs. Furthermore, come to the 1980s, Coop Himmelb(l)au [Wolf D. Prix] came to be a leading exponent of Deconstructivism in architecture since their projects notably represented fragmentary and redefined structures. Furthermore, Wolf D. Prix also stated that architect as a single genius is over, he think the architects nowadays need to learn how to communicate and work in a team, that is the way of Coop Himmelb(l)au design and work in the office.

Personality
Wolf D. Prix got a really strong concept of his design. He like to work as a team rather than a single genius.  He also highly regarded as both an academic and practitioner, Wolf D. Prix is an architect's architect. He like to employed advances in technology to create spaces that challenge tradition and convention. His projects represent an embrace of imbalance, disquiet, distortion, fragmentation and chaos

Famous quotation : "Architecture Must Burn!" a manifesto which extolled the virtues of an architecture "that bleeds, exhausts, that turns and even breaks"

Advice for the young : If you think in architectural terms, only architecture will come out
"don't follow leaders, watch the parking meters"
you don't need the weatherman to know how the wind blows

Part 2 : Wolf D. Prix [Coop Himmelb(l)au] Brief

Room List (minimum requirement)

  • 1 Master Bedroom (min 20sqm) with ensuite
  • 1 Children Bedrooms
  • Studio room or Home office (min 15sqm)
  • Private Living Room
  • Dining Room
  • Kitchen
  • Laundry
  • Housemaid room
  • Car Garage (min for 2 cars)
Reasons

Why I did not include guest room or guest toilet?
In my opinion, according to his style and his hectic activity, he do not want a guest to come to his own personal house. Friends especially clients should come to his office to meet him.

Studio Room or Home office?
Wolf D. Prix like to do his job in his office (outside the house). So this room will act as his storage room to keep important file projects or maybe some important books.

Private Living Room?
He need to have a private living room to relaxed his body and his mind from his business. The living room should be very comfortable and relaxing. It might be a good consideration to have fireplace in the living room with a luxury music player in the living room.

Housemaid Room?
He need to have maybe more than one housemaid to look after his house and maybe the important think he need to have a personal chef to provide him with good and healthy food.

So basically, in my opinion Wolf D. Prix needs a very comfy and luxury house because he is so busy with his life outside the house. Furthermore, there is no need to paint the wall for the house because he loved to use the colour of the material especially 'silver'.

This is my model when I did the Studio Critique on Friday. Basically I almost done for the house model just need to finish about the deliverables (schedule, volume, floor plan etc). Furthermore, I have not finished yet about the window, because i think the window in my house is just a few and i need to think more about it.

During the Studio Critique, Wesley give me suggestion about moving the box down a little bit, and see what happen with that, also about the height of the balcony of the master room, it need to be increase little bit (the standard is around 2 - 2.1 meters).

Lastly, this is the link to the youtube about the animation :

ARCH1390 - Week 6 - Weekly Progress

During week 5 weekend and early week 6 I did some changing in my house design, I also did the flooring of the house and I already got the measurement for each building:
- Building 1 (Wedge) = 207.26 m^3 (22.9 %)
- Building 2 (Cutted pyramid) = 212.65 m^3 (23.5 %)
- Building 3 (box) = 483.98 m^3 (53.6%)

With that all the requirements about the volume of the house and about the each primitive percentage have been satisfied.

During Week 6, I will do the separation of each room and also about the finishing of the interior of the houses. Moreover, I also started to think about the assignment deliverables stuff.

Some examples of Graphic Presentation Style

Design presentation from Yorik Van Havre

Liverpool Canal Bridge presentation; http://yorik.uncreated.net/frenchcv.html
His using different view to explaning different aspect of Liverpool Canal Bridge. He is using almost black and white for the colour which give the sense of strong and rigid which is supported his presentation theme (bridge).

Maira Zasso graphic presentation

She is using some section and elevation with different angle and view. She also use the some colour to explaining about the different type of pathways.
San Isidro Lofts Building ; http://maira.uncreated.net/?cat=8&paged=3

Separation parts of Graphic Design Presentation from Kim de Haan

The following images are created by Kim de Haan. He is a graduated student of UNSW (Interior Architecture) and he become famous because his outstanding final presentation of his Graphic Design Board. His presentation are just very unique and phenomenal. These are some images that I took from his final project http://www.thefutureset.com/kim-de-haan/. He is using a lot of soft colour to explaining the texture of the building, also have a very unique style of presenting his material and about the section of his building.

There are also some graphic presentation which really interesting for me,

After doing some research, I outline something that I think it is really important for making a graphic presentation which is 'your own style'. It means that, you have to be unique and do it with your own way, because if you do it that way, you can explain easily what you have made and you can easily explore and interpret yourself with your work.

ARCH1390 - Week 4 Exercise - Studio Exercise Stage 2 BMW Welt

The first part is about categorizing the spaces inside the building. In here I try to use 3 colours using colour pen to represent the difference between public, semi-private, and private space. I am using RED as the private spaces, BLUE as the semi-private spaces, and GREEN as the public spaces.

Level 4 of BMW Welt; http://www.archdaily.com/29664/bmw-welt-coop-himmelblau/c01-coop-himmelblauarbeitsordner-2007_lyon08-bmwaktuell0-4/

Level 2 of BMW Welt; http://www.archdaily.com/29664/bmw-welt-coop-himmelblau/c01-coop-himmelblauarbeitsordner-2007_lyon08-bmwaktuell0-4/

Section of BMW Welt; http://www.arcspace.com/features/coop-himmelblau/bmw-welt/

After doing some research about the usage of the spaces, it shown that BMW Welt provides lots of public spaces, it makes all the people who come to this building to explore and fell the experience of every kind of shapes and spaces that are given by the building. Furthermore, BMW Welt use some kind of bridge which hung from the ceiling to eliminate columns in the interior, hence give quite massive space to the premiere area. On the other hand, most of the area which categorized as a private area is the technical area or like electricity (power plan) area.

Second part is about the movement paths through the BMW Welt, the first picture is about the main entrance of the BMW Welt, which obviously act as the primary movement path to the building.

BMW Welt Main entrance; http://www.arcspace.com/features/coop-himmelblau/bmw-welt/

Cutted BMW Welt to indicate the movement path
The images above shown the movement path of the BMW Welt. The RED is show the tertiary movement path, and BLUE show the secondary movement path, while the GREEN one show the primary movement path of the building.

The last part of the stage 2 is about the linework to indicate the major 'edges' and primary forms that can be extracted from the built form.

Actual shape of BMW Welt

From the images above, it can be seen that the basic shape of the BMW Welt are one cutted box and two cutted cone combined together to form 'double cone' shape.

The open style of architecture and glass facade gives BMW Welt harmonically blends into the context of the architecture of the Olympiapark and the existing BMW buildings. On the other hand, the interior of the BMW Welt proves just as outstanding as its architecture, it produce a maximum comfort atmosphere in which to present the BMW brand as an impressive experience.
